HACKLES

by

Marsha Berry

Inky clouds unfurl

above a washing line,

construction cranes tremble creaking,

a dog barks questions

in a junkyard in the west,

a tarpaulin semaphores its answers;

the tide runs out

leaving bubbling foam,

punctuating the horizon,

ships line up,

a Fibonacci sequence.

Seagulls wheel keening,

the air grows crowded,

dust and pollen fly,

pulsating static electricity

raises hackles,

changing winds

reverse the poles…

Falling rain drops sparkle,

caught by sun rays

bouncing off the sea.

SEEKERS

by

Marsha Berry

the sea slurps at a fishing boat

sotto voce promises of sanctuary

sea gulls quarrel over scraps

a threesome stands expectantly

young love with a babe

storm petrels fly in formation

a wad of notes exchanged

halting steps and helping hands

somewhere an osprey screams

riding swells in the Indian Ocean

lovers dream of picket fences in a refuge

an albatros sheds a tear

he sorts asylum seeker pleas

caught in a trough of circumlocution

vultures anticipate a meal

@ marsha THE SMILING LINE Nothing but the sea All along the look That stands clear and wide As it always is Nothing but the sea Under the rock Where birds are breathing Like the sound of a tear Sons of dragons Riding on dolphins Ghost archers of the wind Telling tales of the unexpected

Wonderful poems! It's like a quilt of memories, all composing a very special piece.

Laurie, these are just excellent, each of their own poignant power...but together: WOW.

Excellent work. I especially like the first one, Laurie. I like the transitions in it.
