We Shall Keep Looking

As we kept our eyes glued to the sky,

watching the match between the sun and the cloud

There came the miracle worker-Rain

just like a thief against the homeowner’s unprepared.

Heavy outpours filled the soil

as it quenched our thirst of the hot weather, with slippy floppy lands; our paths engraved its future.

With our buckets in our hands,

the wind kept crawling into our tattered wears, as flies accompanied us to the stream; while we opened our mouths to sing songs of our mothers.

Down the stream;

there are many of us,

some with big buckets,

while some with small,

for we all fetched our sorrows

into a new woven basket.

Our babies no longer shall eat like lepers, for our mother’s breast shall be renewed milks from a redefined can preserved in the fridge of comfort.

The Tree

We are poisoned with challenges for poise for we wait when our tree shall no longer run at the wind noise in the ears of the pointless keeping our destiny laying pitiless.

Farmers have we all become

for we have sowed our futures as seeds

on the fertile land of doom

watered daily by a watering can of affliction to sprout misfortune.

We stand, bend and even sit

while we watch our crops die in growth

for its fruit are lasting fortunes

with no taste of sweetness.

Call on the fulanis

to sharpen the teeth of their axes

for we are to pull it down

that tree that took away our lives

in rolls and columns.
