A Military Intelligence Officer from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) /In Opposition (SPLM-IO) was shot dead on Saturday in Juba, the capital city of South Sudan.

Eyewitnesses said that Lt Col George Gismala was shot by security personnel where he died on the spot.

According to witnesses, the officer’s body was driven away by the security agencies from the government of South Sudan.

Colonel George Gismala

This is the first time such an incident has taken place since August last year when the Peace Agreement was signed between the two warring paties.

George Gismala is from the SPLM IO, one of the main rebel movements that had fought against the government for the last two years.

No statement has been issued by either party concerning the incident.

Many South Sudanese people question the commitment and implementation of the the Peace Agreement, particularly if the killing of a military officer occurs and is not acknowledged.
