May She Rest In Peace

while we sleep and dream – she snakes through

the jungle, a nameless concept – one of thousands

who are running, always running

water shoes help her push through the swamp,

keep the heavy rains from pooling around her feet,

improving her odds of dodging snakes and armed guerrillas

she runs towards new borders, away from a raped and

murdered sister, a family slaughtered on her wedding day

while we wake and shower – she runs under darkness

towards that line drawn in the sand between death and freedom

where she will breathe without fear

will rest in the arms of a country at peace –

only to find that the line has disappeared from an ill wind

because we are not safe to sleep and dream and wake

if she lives among us – and she is not free to breathe

and rest unless she keeps running, always running

towards a new line that has not yet been erased

Lianne Kamp

I came to Boston many years ago to write poetry.  Although I never abandoned poetry altogether, life had different plans for me. I have rediscovered the importance of writing and over the last year have been published in a number of Prolific Press journals. Mainly, I write poetry to make my world more panoramic by watching it more closely.
