The Diana Tapes: Shades of Edward and Mrs Simpson

It seems that lessons were not learned from the historic times when King Edward VIII (uncrowned) abdicated the British Throne to enable him to marry a divorced American woman called Mrs Wallis Simpson.

From that situation, our present Queen’s Father, who was brother of Edward, and second in line to the Throne, became crowned King George VI. Our present Queen Elizabeth II and her Late sister, HRH Princess Margaret – were Prince/King George’s two young children at the time, and the Late Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, was the wife of the now new King George.

They knew it was possible this might happen, but highly improbable until, that is, Mrs Simpson captured the heart and senses of (King) Edward.

The Prime Minister of the day, Stanley Baldwin, and the ‘Establishment’, kept the British people unaware of the romance, via putting restrictions on press, radio and TV, though rumours were rife.

Meanwhile the American newspapers and media, as well as those in other countries, had all the detail. This was an insult to the British people.

In modern times, following the divorce of the Late Princess of Wales from HRH The Prince of Wales, and the scenario relating to his subsequent remarriage to Camilla Parker-Bowles, many have compared to the times of King Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson, with a few similarities here and there.

The one thing I wish to comment upon relates to the current dilemma with video tapes which have come into the possession of Channel 4 TV, and concerning which, they plan to broadcast, despite pleas and legal attempts so far to thwart that plan.

Morally, there are a few conflicting aspects to consider but the key point remains, by whom?

Some say The Princess made comments to her speech expert in a private coaching session with no intention they were to be made public, whilst others say she had every intention for that to be the case one day, given the incongruous content relative to speech coaching.

Why was the session filmed? Check the ownership of the film and how it went from one person to the next.

There are those who point out some obvious moral conclusions:

Whilst her Sons, and ex- Husband, also Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Philip (and other Members of the Royal Family) are still alive (as also applies to the ‘blood’ Family of The Princess), then the video tape(s) should be given to, and owned by them – which they may or may not choose to destroy, (though copies will undoubtedly exist).

Alternatively, after another few decades have passed, then historians in the future might be given access to decide at that time – another comment that has been expressed by a person known to be a loyal supporter of The Prince of Wales.

This just kicks the metaphorical can down the road, so to speak, as the descendants of Diana’s children will not wish her name tainted at that time either.

For me, the key thing regarding Channel 4 appears to be that this video film apparently has already been broadcast in America, so once again, the British people have been prevented from what has been made available to the rest of the world.

If it had been prevented from being screened anywhere, then fair enough, it would become a moral issue for her Families, the Courts and Channel 4, but as it has been broadcast and circulated outside Britain, then the toothpaste is out of the tube and cannot be put back in.

Her Families must place their trust in the fact that Diana was, and still remains, a truly loved and admired person, so whatever is said within the film will be viewed by compassionate and understanding hearts.

Somehow, one has the feeling it may be other things, or references, however, which may not be received well.
