News Watch

I allow the world to

Enclose me, a gas lantern.

Brass the sky, the moths

Bi-wing planes.

Somewhere outside

The lantern, the sound

Of a clacking typewriter,

The following night’s story

About heroes and glory.

I used the only match

After I was incarcerated.

I sit, facing the mantle,

Against the scorching plate

Of the translucent globe

Absorbing the brightness

Of the light before

It dims yellow, leaving

Me with the very last story,

Perhaps mid-plot or

At the edge of resolution.

Alejandro Escudé’s first book of poems, My Earthbound Eye, was published in September 2013. He holds a master’s degree in creative writing from UC Davis and teaches English. Originally from Argentina, Alejandro lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
