It is a sad fact that the first word your child will hear is Brexit, and it is probably the last you will hear.

It pops up like a nasty virus everywhere. When you hear it you are left feeling numb and confused, like your pants have just fallen down in a shopping center. You’re embarrassed but you can do nothing about it.

Those still wishing to remain are ridiculed for their extreme views of “kindness, tolerance and unity” by Pro Brexit groups and people all pumped up and ‘Hard.’ All of them look like someone you would definitely cross over the road from if they approached you, with names like “Leave Means Leave” or in other words “Fuck-Off Johnny Foreigner and bring back Nelson.”

It’s easy to forget how stocked up by vile publications like the Daily Mail (which interestingly supported Mosley’s Fascists). British society became toxic in the months before and after the referendum.

Behind all this continued rhetoric and flag waving is the faint hint of racial superiority raising its ugly head again. Just look at its supporters; Boris, Farage, Gove, Rees-Mogg et al. None would look out of place sharing a platform with some very unpleasant people from a not too distant European past.

I wrote this poem the day after the vote:

This Bastard Generation

The dust has settled

On this burnt out land

Wiping up a desert storm of hatred

“Get out of My Land”

This bastard generation took it upon themselves

To set fire to happiness

Torch a refugee home

Spit in the face of their neighbour,

Drilled holes of hatred into their children’s eyes

The dust has settled

On this burnt out land

The dust had settled …

Poisoned the waterways and arteries

Of our land

Leaving behind only

This Bastard Generation

David R Mellor

Born 1964, (Liverpool, England) difficult birth, didn’t find my voice until my youth. Years of thinking I was nobody and treated as such. However, hit the paper papering over the scars. Found understanding and belief through words. I have been published and performed widely from the BBC, The Tate, galleries and pubs and everything in between.

My poems are autobiographical, others topical and several my take on life. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing. Please feel free to share your thoughts on links below.
