The build up to this World Cup was a minor irritant, like your child running off to play in the field, you knew something bad was going to happen. Compared to the days of the “Golden Generation,” the amount of flags flying outside was minimal, with my neighbour looking at mine as if I was slightly mad. Thankfully the only saving grace was that there was no fear of hooliganism, as clearly Putin himself would kick your head in.

So we sat back to watch the start in half empty pubs and only a few nomadic English supporters in Russia, clearly lost on their way to sunnier climates. We won the first game against Tunisia then hammered Panama. Clearly we were great and many of us started to lose our heads. Then after the hangover wore off we realized we can only beat teams far worse than us. With nothing to play for, Belgium offered stiffer opposition and they had the nerve to attack us with the logical conclusion of a defeat.

Within seconds the collective depression set in and like an alcoholic who had remained happy and sober for a while we hit the bottle of self-loathing. Clinging onto faint hope at least we are avoiding the good teams now and just hope those teams that can play football forget to turn up later.

I remain hopeful like seeing your mobile phone fall into the sea, I can dry it out and all will be well. Let’s hope so.

David R Mellor

Born 1964, (Liverpool, England) difficult birth, didn’t find my voice until my youth. Years of thinking I was nobody and treated as such. However, hit the paper papering over the scars. Found understanding and belief through words. I have been published and performed widely from the BBC, The Tate, galleries and pubs and everything in between.

My poems are autobiographical, others topical and several my take on life. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing. Please feel free to share your thoughts on links below.
