Voices from the deep

(For the miners of Afghanistan and India (Meghalaya) who lost their lives due to society’s apathy)

In quest of your wealth

We dig deep into the earth

To develop your industries

We risk our lives

You boast of increased production

We die of asphyxiation

You make profits of mammoth proportion

We work to stave off starvation

You pursue relentless excavation

We leave our solid body for ‘sedimentation’

You happily sit in your cozy houses

We are hapless: leave our wailing children and spouses

You never try to imagine our situation

We face hardships beyond your comprehension
