Facing Death with a Heart full of Sorrow

Pacing back and forth in the darkened night wing

of Sacred Heart hospital

Peeking into the sanitized, white room where my mother

lies broken and sick

Tears gather around the eyes of the rest of my

immediate family

I have yet to shed a tear,

but I am twisted inside

My stomach feels like a cornered dove

turned into a rapacious puma

Bubbling to the surface, struggling

to escape

I pace around for a while longer

and decide to sit down

I fall asleep and wake to

the news that my mother will be alright

I wipe the tears from my heart

and nearly fall from the amount

of adrenaline running through my system
