The English don’t do summer or football, neither was supposed to happen this year…
People stared for days at the shiny thing in the sky, having no idea what it was. They realized that’s what “foreign” countries have all the time.
And then like naughty drunken puppies we jumped on cars or anything that moved (we clearly couldn’t do that in Russia) as we cruised to the semi-finals of the World Cup.
We’ve left the EU, can’t stand Trump so all that’s left is this impromptu love in.
The clear worry remains that we now have to face good teams, Croatia being mildly good.
The winners of the other semi-final are proper good, and we all expect to down our beers then fill them up with tears and smash Belgium truffles in the streets or call for a ban on French Brie.
Oh we’ve already done that – Brexit.
David R Mellor
Born 1964, (Liverpool, England) difficult birth, didn’t find my voice until my youth. Years of thinking I was nobody and treated as such. However, hit the paper papering over the scars. Found understanding and belief through words. I have been published and performed widely from the BBC, The Tate, galleries and pubs and everything in between.
My poems are autobiographical, others topical and several my take on life. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I have enjoyed writing. Please feel free to share your thoughts on links below.
