A Fulani youth-led organisation aspiring to bring together all Fulani speakers across the globe in a single platform, recently celebrated its third anniversary in Gambia
At a groundbreaking event; Fulbe Africa, a non-profit ethnic organization based in the Gambia chose the theme ‘Evolution of Fulani culture in modern times’.
The third anniversary, held at the Alliance Franco at Kairaba Avenue, was attended by various subsidiary associations from across the country and some government officials.
Highlights of the event included cultural performances, drama plays and musical shows.
The President of the association Mr. Ousman Sowe said Fulbe Africa was formed with the main objective of preserving the rich Fulani culture and language and promotes unity among Fulbe across the globe.
According to Mr. Sowe, over the past two years Fulbe Africa has organized series of events in The Gambia in a bid to bring young people, elders, women and children to celebrate the country’s rich culture. The theme for this year’s celebrations ‘Evolution of Pulaar in Modern Times’ is no accident he opined.
The President of the association further underscored the significance of the celebration, and summed up the purpose of the anniversary celebration as showcasing and celebrating culture and tradition. “The aim of the organization is to bring together both the young and the elderly in a bid to showcase Fulani culture by different dialects with the hope that young Fulani will be inspired to maintain and promote their culture and tradition.”
Recounting some of their successes, Sowe revealed that the association has over the past 12 months been meeting with different associations from different regions in the country for collaboration and partnership. “The association has also increased in terms of its membership within the past months and has got members in different parts of the world.” He advised members to remain united and work towards the development of the Association.
Emphasizing the importance of culture, Sowe stated that culture is what identifies people sand that it should be maintained at all costs.
He called on other tribes to form similar groups to ensure that African languages and Cultures are preserved. “In ensuring that the Fulani language is preserved and spoken, Fulbe Africa aims to partner with organizations that are involved in such initiatives both in the Gambia and beyond.”
He thanked Fulbe Africa members and all those who supported them for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that the association implements its activities and Programmes as envisaged.
The guest speaker for the event was Mr. Dawda Jallow, a legal expert at the Ministry of Finance. Mr. Jallow spoke on the topic “the Evolution of fulani Culture in Modern Times.”
