Let Freedom Reign
Kite flies high, brisk breezes blow,
smell of coconut oil permeates the air;
waves crashing with a raucous blast,
beach balls bounce on the 4th of July.
Flags flying high, snapping in rhythm;
children running about, kicking up sand.
Planes fly by with banners selling spirits,
a hot dog run on cotton candy days.
The band plays by the old boardwalk;
people scurry like ants to honey drops.
Firecrackers pop and sky rockets swoosh.
It so nice to be away from the rancid city.
Off on a romp, someone’s streaking there
by the water’s edge, to screams and laughter.
Ocean’s cold, nice for polar bears and dares;
Freedom reigns for all on Independence Day.
I Think I Died Today, Rev 4
I think I died today.
Staring at the bare walls;
a knife, a fork, a bottle and
candle lay before me.
The sounds of blaring horns,
screeching brakes and shouting;
echo from sweltering streets below
through a shaded open window.
The smells and hell of the city
permeate the entire room and
the fan in the corner just quit;
but…… I think I died today.
I laid there, on the old mattress,
sweat running down my face.
I dozed off for a bit, and awoke
in lovely fields of green grass,
with white crosses all about.
I stood and watched
friends of old
toss roses of red
into the hole of darkness,
landing upon a casket.
I think I’m in there, tucked inside
wearing my dark gray suit,
white shirt and my hated tie…
Oh yes, I died today,
I just don’t know why.
"Let Freedom Reign" is a lovely nostalgic piece of Americana; a wonderfully written and timely gift for your fellow Americans as July 4th approaches. I sure hope these two will be included in a book SOON. You have an established fan base waiting patiently including me; I like the revision to "I Think I Died Today" and I personally think it is a great companion piece to your "Jacob Swam the River". ( I'm quite partial to those two). As always, your writing is highly entertaining and marketable. On second thought, don't keep us waiting.
