On The Evangelical Right

They are peeled skeletons without an apparent god

And are comprised of muddied cracked glass that must be smashed.

They yield bloody apocalyptic swords addicted to war

And are scarlet parrots.

Bloody visions multiply

While a sickly tiger mangles piety.

They build cities of murderous relics

Of rot too dangerous and strange to share.

They are happiest in darkness

Making a gong-like dissonance

With swollen tongues tasting death.

In contrast, my faith is like a slow musical discipline

That dreams of flying through, and opening inviting sky.

Studying Tanya

As I contemplate lightning words

I sense rolling waves

And sea-silent images

That allow me to escape trampling winds

At the star’s quiet behest

And so I become a centripetal voyager

Flying over green and loving

Blue mountains, sensing quiet energy

Behind Hebrew letters

And feeling the peaceful still

Of violet-lavender winter.

Contemplating compact G-dly words

I perceive spiritual symbols

Behind every act

Like a child who playfully

Throws a living stone.

I touch Hashem’s likeness

Admiring morning blossoming rose

And find the soft moon

Touching my expanding soul.
