A small eco-friendly gesture can change our attitude towards the environment. After I got married, I adopted a good habit from my wife; not to thoughtlessly throw away anything on the road or street, its proper place being the trash bin. I was sensitized by mere advice.

It is very disturbing to witness piles of garbage along roads and streets. The foul and mucky smell prevalent in most parts of the cities is a serious test and trial for our country and its administrative units. All the waste ends up in open spaces everyday which is subsequently burnt into an unpleasant source of air pollutants, from greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide to tiny particles and toxic chemicals that can harm human lungs and other organs of the body.

According to reports, around two million people die prematurely from effects of polluted air every year. If we plant a trillion trees and don’t sensitize our people, the tree plantation projects are good for nothing.

The Government needs to address this serious issue.
