Saturday 11th July marked the 26th anniversary of World Population Day, a day inaugurated by the Governing Council of the United Nations Population Fund to draw the international community’s attention to the urgency and importance of population issues. The theme this year was “The vulnerable populations in emergency situations.”
Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, MONUSCO, confirmed the organisation’s strong commitment to providing support to the DRC government to ensure the protection of vulnerable segments of the population, particularly women and girls, in the context of security and humanitarian crises observed east of the country, tens of thousands people already internally displaced.
Diene Keita, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative in the DRC, on the occasion of World Population Day strongly emphasised “that there is no excuse when it comes to protecting human life, especially that of women. Their full protection must be a priority in all circumstances and at any time for the government and international community. That is why the Congolese government is invited to step up efforts to further strengthen and consolidate the initiatives already taken in the field of protecting and promoting the rights of women and girls, particularly in areas affected by war and instability in the east.”
“The vulnerability of women and girls in crisis situations is well established. That is why the UNFPA is strongly committed in the fight for the protection of this category of the population, providing a consistent and continuous support, particularly in the fields of health and well being with particular emphasis on respect for the dignity and promotion of security and fundamental human rights”said Diene Keita added.
