ON GETTING A MAMMOGRAM

By

Laurie Kolp

She kneads my breast

flattens it like bread dough

pulls out the center

and plops it on the counter,

a fresh morning treat.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s

 it out of shape

presses cool plates,

StIcKy fingers she

finagles away

from the buns,

says to FREEZE!

I take a deep breath,

close my eyes

hear my friend

singing…

I Will Survive

I will survive

As long as I know how to Love

I know I’ll be alive

…center stage

last October,

but she didn’t.

I inhale, exhale, relish the treat.

ON THE EXAMINATION TABLE, WAITING

By

Laurie Kolp

Embattled

 in an affair with impatience

after one cooking show too many,

you think your paper gown an apron

-the doctor, sushi

 for lunch.

    THE SMILING LINE

    Nothing but the sea
    All along the look
    That stands clear and wide
    As it always is

    Nothing but the sea
    Under the rock
    Where birds are breathing
Like the sound of a tear

    Sons of dragons
    Riding on dolphins
    Ghost archers of the wind
    Telling tales of the unexpected
