IMAGINARY WINGS

By

Marsha Berry

I steal a moment,

stretch my imaginary wings,

in the corner of the yard,

the old woodshed is damp

from a day’s drizzle,

the sunset looks pale tonight

against the street lights,

bedraggled birds sit

silent in the cypress tree,

yet I am warm in the glow

of your longtime tender gaze.

RAKU
By

I stamp the shore
of my fondest wishes
now almost leather hard,
my footsteps coil
seaweed love knots
oxidising in scorching sun:
mussel shells
shrink and shiver
at the edges of the flue
in life’s kiln.
Wondering if
I’ve added sufficient grog
for heat expansions
and contractions,
the raku fire is fickle.

I glaze a once-fired dream
thrown with girlish expectations
with copper carbonate,
stoke the driftwood fire,
increase the air,
fingers crossed
for enso crackles,
an overflowing cup to grace
a moonlit shelter.

Wonderful poems, both with a depth of emotion and superbly crafted. What an honor to read such vulnerable beauty.

I was impressed with this powerful paean to what matters when I fist saw it. I'm glad it got acknowledged by showing up in print. Families should live this way - behave as if there were no distractors first, play video games later.
