The Vice President’s Role

The press called the meeting contentious –

A meeting without potential

For compromise –

As the Democratic leadership

Got the President to go all in

On a government shutdown

If he doesn’t get funding

For his brand-name, legacy

Border wall

And just in case

America doesn’t remember

The last time

The government closed,

The Vice President –

Although not in the meeting –

Was in the room

Sitting quietly,

Out of place,

Listless and useless

Providing a visual aid

To remind us

What a shutdown

Looks like.

Author of the books, Buddha Bastinado Blues and The Kill Gene, Ben White thought he was a poet, only to find out he is not a poet at all. He is a witness. What he writes is testimony.
