Following the appointment by the African Union of Edem Kodjo as facilitator of the national dialogue in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Secretary General of the Presidential Majority, Aubin Minaku, announced the imminent establishment of the dialogue preparatory committee.
In Kodjo’s first news conference since his appointment as facilitator he stated that they will try to implement the preparatory committee by the end of the week.
Indeed, the establishment of the preparatory committee should precede the actual start of the dialogue announced by the head of state Joseph Kabila last year and is supposed to allow the holding of peaceful elections in the DRC.
Moreover, Edem Kodjo said that more time will be needed to consult those who are still opposed to these foundations. He believes that dialogue must remain inclusive.
However, the former Togolese Prime Minister and Secretary General of the OAU indicated that dialogue is still open with those in favour. The facilitator Edem Kodjo further informed that there will always be room for those opposed to dialogue, as they have expressed the need to come and take part in the meeting.
